Marketing and Promoting Guide
Marketing and Promoting Guide
Own your foundation
Your home base matters most
No marketplace or platform should be the only place people can find you. Build one simple home base, whether that is a basic website, or even a business profile, and point everything there. This protects you when any platform changes its rules, algorithms, or fees.
Social media
Show the work and the person
People buy from people they feel connected to. Share your process, your studio, your inspiration, and your finished pieces. You do not need every platform. Pick one or two where your buyers actually spend time, and show up there consistently. Instagram and Pinterest are strong for visual art. Facebook groups still work well for community and word of mouth.
A gentle reminder: no platform owes you traffic. The shops and artists who do well long term are the ones who treat their own audience, their email list, their social following, and their community groups as the real asset. Platforms come and go. Your people stay.
The one channel you actually own
An email list is the only audience that cannot be taken away by an algorithm change. Even a small list of 50 to 100 genuine fans is valuable. A free Mailchimp or Substack account works perfectly. Send occasional notes about new work, behind the scenes moments, or upcoming shows. Keep it personal and low pressure.
Promotions that work
Collaborate with one other artist for a shared post or giveaway. Participate in seasonal moments like holidays, local art walks, or awareness months related to your subject matter. Share a "studio sale" or "new work just listed" update to your email list before anywhere else. That small act of making subscribers feel like insiders builds real loyalty.
Photography
Good photos do the heavy lifting
Natural light, a neutral background, and a steady hand are enough to start. Show the work flat and also styled in a room setting if you can. Buyers want to imagine it in their home. A photo that does that work for them is worth more than any caption.
